SCM Canada pledges support on refugee case

RESOLUTION IN SOLIDARITY WITH LAIBAR SINGH

The Student Christian Movement of Canada (SCM) would like to state its support of Laibar Singh in his efforts to remain in Canada. We stand in solidarity with and admiration of the courageous and non-violent actions of Mr. Singh’s supporters in ensuring that Mr. Singh was not unjustly deported on December 10th. We urge the Canadian Government reverse its decision to deport Mr. Singh. SCM Canada stands alongside the many other individuals and organisations supporting Laibar Singh; the treatment he is receiving concerns Canadians of diverse backgrounds, not just the South Asian community.

As Christians dedicated to working toward a more just society we are saddened by our government’s actions in this case and strongly urge that Mr. Singh be allowed to stay in Canada and continue to receive the support he needs.

Resolution passed by the SCM Canada National Board, December 16, 2007.

ABOUT THIS CASE

What do you know about Laibar

What do you know about Laibar's case?

How do you know that he has genuine well-founded fear of persecution?

And in your movement's opinion, can a person ever be deported for a good and just reason?

Have your views changed in light of his community's recent agreement to allow him to be deported?

False Documents

It is worth noting that, though Laibar entered Canada on forged documents, this is actually not illegal and is accepted by the government given the extenuating circumstances of many refugee and immigration claimants.
