Omnivores waste gasoline

I randomly came across the following page on the internet:

http://bicycleuniverse.info/transpo/beef.html

Looks interesting -- it presents 'information' in a factual manor -- I don't know enough to know if it actually is factual or not though!

I don't buy into the whole don't bike because it wastes gas logic -- we all need exercise; and if you get from A to B while getting exercise then why not? certainly don't drive to the gym to get exercise if you can bike there and include the trip as part of your workout routine?

But the interesting tidbit that was slipped into the article was that a 'typical American diet' vs. a vegetarian diet is like driving 10 miles or so extra per day!!

Interesting thought; it gives me something to think about and cause to review the amount of meat that I consume

Anyone else have thoughts?

Trevor

Remarks

It's not saying that biking uses less fossil fuels than driving: "bicycling uses less fossil energy than driving even if the cyclist were eating nothing but beef."

I've heard that bicycles are highly efficient as far as the amount of energy it takes to travel. It makes sense. If you drive a car, you are not only transporting your body, but that entire heavy hunk of plastic and metal and rubber with you. I mean how much does a car weigh, compared to a bike?

The article talks about grass-fed beef. I think we have to return to this type of agriculture, but we won't be able to do it until we dramatically cut our meat consumption.
